I first read this beautiful, and true, little story in a Family Circle magazine of 20 or more years ago. I clipped it out and read it every year. I’m so happy to find it now in kindle print. It’s a Christmas story worth sharing with family!
We collect Christmas books as one of our family traditions. While we have many with a similar theme of giving rather than receiving, "A Chrsitmas Dress for Ellen" is clearly one of our favorites. It is beautifully written without being too long and has outstanding illustrations. I think the aspect that puts it above the others is that it's based on a true story. While other books tell a fictional story about the idea of going out of one's way for others, this one is a true story about real people who truly sacrificed in big ways for others. For my kids to know these event really happened makes the idea of sacrifice more concrete. In a world where children expect to have so much these days, this book puts things into perspective.
