Going Home Unfinished Business Nora Roberts 9780373285037 Books Reviews
As with pretty much all authors, they get better with time and this is a patchy collection of Roberts' early writing for Silhouette romances. There are three short novels in here but I have to say I prefer some of them to her later supernatural stuff. If anything they are shorter, punchier but are wildly romantic
Island of flowers is the best of these where Laine returns to her father (as an adult) after her mother's death. Laine's parents were divorced and it was bitter, Laine wants to reconcile with her father, but unfortuately her father's business partner, Dillon, believes she has only returned for the money. Sparks fly, Dillon treats her badly, but in the end all turns out for the best - as it should!
In Mind Over Matter (which I didn't really enjoy a great deal) it was all about a clairvoyant mother and daughter who are to be the subject of a documentary, but the daughter clashes with the director - as you do - and, well sparks fly......and love....well anyway.
Finally in Unfinished business a pianist who has been pressured as a child to perform returns home after 8 years to reconcile herself with her mother and childhood sweetheart...sparks fly and.....well anyway.....
Like I said these are patchy - and these are romances and they are nice for that, but Nora Roberts definitely got better with time, it is nice to have a collection of her early works which are often tricky to get hold of, to compare and enjoy her early romances.
The stories in this book were mediocre with the first one, "Unfinished Business," being, in my opinion, the best in the bunch. However, even that story wasn't what I expect from picking up a Nora novel. The book itself would never have been my choice (a co-worker passed it on to me to read). All three stories were the same old, same old. Girl meets boy, girl and boy are at each other's throats, then girl and boy have sex, then they fall in love. One mistakes the other's intentions but in the end all is happily ever after. The stories lacked substance. "Island of Flowers" at least took us on a nice tour of the Hawaiian Islands, however the female lead in that story, Lainey Simmons, was nothing but a milk toast, annoying creature as you watched her fall apart (but immediately fall in love even though he was downright arrogant and rude) under the influence of Dillon O'Brian, her father's business partner. "Mind Over Matter" was a boring and ridiculous story of a clairvoyant mother/daughter, the daughter, A.J. (Aurora) working as a talent agent and involved with a producer, David Brady, who wants to produce a show with her mother in the starring role. The ending was tiresome with all the female/male mind games and misinterpreted emotions - very ho hum and enough to put you to sleep for lack of a storyline. The one story that was anywhere near decent to my mind was "Unfinished Business" about a world renowned concert pianist (Vanessa Sexton) coming home to make amends with her mother with whom she had never really had a relationship. She hooks up with her childhood flame, Brady Tucker, the good doctor in town and learns quite a bit about not only her mother but the feelings she and Brady begin to rekindle as the story moves along. All in all, this book is very early Nora and while I am an avid Nora fan, I feel the stories were definitely not worth the time reading. Nora has some excellent early works so don't let this bad egg discourage your reading them. "The Villa," "Homeport," "Carolina Moon," "River's End" and "Honest Illusions" are just a few of her early works and part of a very long list that are definitely worth the read.
Going Home by Nora Roberts
3 different stories about different people, all Silhoutee books.
.
Unfinished Business
Vaniessa, a concert pianist, and her mother Loretta are together again. Van is visiting at her mother's house.
She remembers all the pianos but they are all gone. Van is brought up to date with her best friend-back then, and her brother Brady Tucker who's also a doctor now.
She meets with not only her friends but learns of the things in her own mother's life and the reasoning behind why her mother gave her up to her father.
Tender scenes and shocking ones...
.
Island of Flowers
Laney Simmons travels to Hawaii to meet her father. She finds out that in her 15 year absence much has changed even that her father owns the plane company that is flying her in.
The pilot, Dylan O'Brien, half owner, sees her as an upscale princess and treats her as such. She studies him while he's conducting business and sees how surprised he is to see her.
She learns the truth about her education and how her father had paid for it all and then some...
Loved hearing of the scenery as she realizes what is really going on...
.
Mind Over Matter
He turns to a fortune teller in hopes to make his job easier by learning more about the career.
David Brady is producing a show on the paranormal. Because of her involvement with the VanCamps he wants her to help bring their case to the forefront.
Clarissa Bass is the fortune teller. She hopes to protect her mother and their life.
He fantasizes about her and learns more about her life and her family. Her mother was involved with finding others who had been kidnapped or murdered.
Lots of background information about the production of a documentary series. Hot steamy sex scenes.
I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).
i loved all three stories they were great, i love it when i can get a book that keeps me from not wanting to put the book down. keep up the great work nora.
Three short stories that are entertaining but not her best work. Roberts has become an even better writer since these were originally published, but they are good romances and a Nora Roberts junky like me wants to read and own all of her works.
nice book
Couldn't put it down.
Two delightful stories.
