I enjoy historical fiction, so when I read the book's description and saw it had a 4.5 star rating on 895 reviews, I downloaded it. I should have actually read the reviews, because now that I have, I see that most of them were for a book by the same title written by James Patterson. Note to author: research book titles more closely and use something else if it's already taken, or you'll be saddled by reviews not intended for you. For this book by Tim Vicary: I thought it was very slow and tedious, and I so disliked Sarah that I kept putting the book down after only a few pages of reading. I just couldn't get interested in the story. I didn't think Deborah was any more intriguing. I finally gave up reading the book halfway through Part Two. although I did skim through some of the rest of it. It didn't seem fair to give a one-star rating on a book I only waded 20% of the way through, so I upped it to three stars because what I read and skimmed seemed well researched and well written from a technical viewpoint. It might well have improved if I'd stuck with it.

entirely too much unnecessary detail to wade thru. There were times when I found myself skimming past many, many pages of prose that a good editor should have compacted down to a few short summary sentences. The characters were well developed and you will despise many of them. You’re supposed to. This was a difficult time in history and Tim Vicary hasn’t whitewashed the subject, not even a little; at times I felt like I could use a shower. “Cat and Mouse” is a long book, over 400 pages. If you have the ability to scan the verbosity while retaining the thread of the story, this is a worthwhile brick and you will get a stark perspective on the early 20th century Suffergett’s.
I read the third book in this series some time ago (not realizing it was a series) and found it to be excellent (The Monmouth Summer). Unfortunately this book was not of the same caliber as the first one I read by this author. I thought the subject matter of this book appeared interesting and had hopes for another good historical fiction. This book did cover some aspects of history, but it was written in a style more like a romance novel with topics of adultery, prostitution and homosexual relationships at the forefront of the story, with a bit of history woven in. The book kept my interest but it is not one I would highly recommend.
Wonderful book! I loved the way the characters interacted and how they had such individual lives they melded together to tell a complex, riveting story. The characters were all very interesting people who came from different backgrounds. Their choices drastically affected the lives of those around them. While the book was about the fight for women's rights, it was so much more! It spoke of sisterly love and of motherly love and of the strength gained from that love. It also spoke of homosexual love and of love of illicit affairs; it spoke of the love between husbands and wives. But, underneath all, it spoke of love of country and of mankind. This was a complex book that touched directly upon a number of lives and indirectly upon innumerable lives . This book was impossible to put down!
If I could I would give this book ten stars instead of five. Having read all the Sarah Newby books by this author I decided to try this historical novel which also featured a Sarah. I was not disappointed. The novel is so well-written with characters who steal your heart. The descriptions of prison life for suffragettes is stomach-turning but you can't turn away from them. If you, too, have finished the Newby series and you want more, try this novel. Both Sarahs are strong-willed women who know what they want and will get it at all costs.
I love historical novels, and Tim Vicary is a Master Story Teller! Absolutely loved this book! The story of women fighting for equality in a male dominated world is one of courage, perseverance, and dedication. And though this book is set in Northern Ireland and London in the early 20th century, the theme has been a universal one for at least a century. We women of today owe a great debt to the courage and determination of the Suffragettes of the early 20th century. In Cat & Mouse, we have two sisters in vastly different circumstances who each have great difficulties to overcome. Only their courage and refusal to give up, along with their devotion to one another, helps them overcome unrealistic odds. As a counterpoint, we also catch a glimpse of the Troubles of Northern Ireland at the same time. There is enough action and intrigue, good versus evil, and heroism and tenacity to make for a great movie. In fact, this story would make a great action adventure movie! Hollywood producers, are you paying attention?
I received this from the author. From the beginning I felt like I was right next to the characters. Two sisters who each believe the other has a better marriage carry the story. Sarah, a suffragette, and Deborah, a wealthy lady of leisure. Possible war between England and Ireland form the backdrop. Thrown in the mix are spies, a murderer, one husband a closeted homosexual, and the other husband keeps scheduled appointments with prostitutes. This is historical fiction, mystery, and thriller all in one book.

Tim Vicary is a brilliant writer. This book is so good you'll want to read it all at once. There are so many riveting events in this book; varying facets and characters all with strengths and some with abusive power. I was amazed at how easily he slipped from one character and their part to another with no effort. He kept me on the edge of my seat anticipating the outcomes. I love that the story is based on historic events.I was shocked at what I didn't know. The reality was unreal and made me grateful and proud of the brave women who defended all women of their era and to the present. Great author. I will definitely be reading his work again!
